Bringing the Atomic Swank

Today’s design continues TeeFury’s Artist Mentorship initiative in pairing  AWESwanky (aka. Michael Swank) with Atomic Rocket (aka. Jesse Sanz). For comic fans wanting to take a break from surfing the cosmic waves, this Tiki style design brings a refreshing tropical style to the universe.

The resulting work is “Radd’s Surf Shop available now!

We’ll get this luau started with AWESwanky:
Welcome to the TeeFury flock! Please tell us a bit about yourself and about this design.
Thanks, glad to be on TeeFury. First and foremost I am a father of three great kids. I live up in the Pacific Northwest by Seattle. I love creating shirt designs as a hobby. This design is a surf logo look with my favorite comic character the Silver Surfer and his enemy Galactus as a tiki.

Where did the inspiration for this design come from?
As I mentioned inspired by my favorite character the Silver Surfer who real name is Norrin Radd and I also love surf designs and logos. It’s always been a dream of mine to surf.

What parts of pop culture do you find have most influenced your style?
A lot of pop culture has influenced my life from classic arcade games, Nintendo, comic books, cartoons, sci-fi. I’m a huge Trekkie!

What goal do you most aspire towards in your design career?
It’s a great honor designing something that people want to spend their hard earned money on to wear. I would like to do that more than just a hobby, it would be awesome to do that full time.

Are there any artists or styles that your admire?
I like retro looking styles and propaganda designs relating to sci-fi and pop culture. Steve Thomas is a great artist that accomplishes that. As far as comic book artist go I’ve always enjoyed the work of Alex Ross and Mike Mayhew.

What are some things you learned from this process?
Patience is a virtue. If at first you don’t succeed try again. So many times your designs or ideas get rejected but don’t give up keep doing what you enjoy.

Any shout outs and where we can keep up with your work?
I like to give a shout out to my wife Charity who has to put up with me and my three kids Vaughn, Jasmine, and Ezri. Of course a special thanks to AtomicRocket. You can check out my other designs and like my artist Facebook page here: https://facebook.com/AWESwanky

Behold the Result Cosmic!

The collaborative product fits well for a being with god-like powers. Echoing the shape of the Destroyer of Worlds, we can see the character’s iconic helm take form into the unabashadly kitch fun of the Tiki style. Familiar TeeFurians will recognize AtomicRocket’s prolific work including “Impersonate”, “Invader Flakes”, “Gir2-D2”, and many more.

Hi there AtomicRocket! Please tell us a bit about the experience of working with another artist in this mentorship process.
It was interesting for me to work with an artist that I didn’t already know. I found it beneficial for my process to see how another artist works and if I could help someone in return, well I guess that’s just cake. Yummy, yummy collaborative cake (that isn’t a lie).

Have you done many collaborations in the past?
Only a handful (with Harebrained, Karen Hallion & Tim Shumate).

Do you have a standard process from concept to final art for you work?
Not really a set process but I can tell you there’s lots of dancing and swearing involved.

Your designs cover quite a broad range of fandoms. Any particular favorites you gravitate towards?
Invader Zim and Transformers, mostly.

Which one of your designs/ characters would you like to see made into a kids book?
Invader Zolo would be a fun one. I may have to get that idea Kickstarted.

You can find more of his designs on his artist profile page here, follow his Facebook here, and see more of his designs below!

  • Eric!

I will buy this, but would have paid extra to have first design on the front small as crest and the main design on the back like a real surf shop shirt.
