Have you ever wanted to cosplay? Don’t be intimidated, it’s surprisingly easy to get into the hobby. You can start simple. Though you could build a set of armor right out the gate, you don’t have to. Remember: there’s no wrong way to cosplay. Begin simply by modifying existing items of clothing (no sewing required – fabric glue does wonders) or even better, start with everyday cosplay. This type of costuming involves assembling an outfit you can wear out and about as part of your normal every day wardrobe. Of course, if you want to wear capes and helms to the office, you definitely can, but everyday cosplay ensembles are ideal for the occasions when a full on Disney princess dress won’t work.
There are multiple ways to attack everyday cosplay. You can wear hoodies, dresses, or tunics printed with character designs. You can pair solid color dresses and tights – for example, a blue dress with yellow tights and a red headband makes a basic Snow White ensemble. Finally, you can build a cosplay outfit from just a t-shirt. See. Told you it could be easy.
Let’s take a few examples from the TeeFury gallery:
The Doctor
Piecing together a Doctor costume – any Doctor – is a good gateway to the cosplay hobby. You can craft or purchase screen accurate coats and shirts to match the various Doctors, but you can collect similar items from your closet or a thrift store. Identify which elements of a Doctor’s outfit make him recognizable. For the 11th Doctor, those elements are his sonic screwdriver, a red bow tie, and a brown tweed jacket. You could wear a Matt Smith t-shirt from TeeFury with dark brown or black pants, a beige blazer, brown boots, and a fez or his sonic screwdriver. Done and done.

Longing to dress like the hero of Legend of Zelda? You’ll need to go green. TeeFury’s A Hero’s Journey is a great choice for the base of this outfit. Choose a green skirt and brown tights to wear with this tee or opt for green leggings or jeans. Layer a brown wrap or cardigan over the top, and put on suede or leather brown knee-high boots. Top it off with a green headband or a hat. If you have any Legend of Zelda jewelry, like a Hylian shield necklace, this is the time to wear it.
Do you get the idea? Basically, choose a character and find a t-shirt featuring him or her. Think about the main colors of the character’s outfits, whether he or she carries any props, and pay attention to the shoes and accessories. Translate your notes into everyday clothes. You’ll be surprised at what kind of cosplay you can design. Be sure to share to tag us in any photos of your creations with us on Twitter on Instagram!
